Our machiya townhouses serve as great home offices. They come with:

  • good-sized tables suited to workstation use

  • weekly cleaning service with a change of towels and bed linen

Komatsu Residences


Our most popular machiya for long-term stays. Combining traditional craftsmanship with modern Japanese elegance, this townhouse in the historic district of Gion is divided into four apartments suitable for singles, couples or groups of up to 4 adults. Take the tour here.


Rates for stays of at least 14 nights Starting from 2,500 yen per person per night + 3,000 yen to 5,000 yen a week (cleaning fee) Rates include all applicable taxes but may vary depending on the season.

The Lounge at West Kujo


A newly refurbished machiya within walking distance of Kyoto Station, a hub of bus and rail connections as well as shops and eateries. Located in a quiet neighbourhood, this townhouse can host up to 2 adults but the dining table is large enough to seat 6, making it a perfect workspace. Take the tour here.


Monthly rate 159,000 yen (5,300 yen a night) + 5,000 yen a week (cleaning fee) Maximum capacity: 2 adults Rates may vary depending on the season.

BenTen Residences


This pair of 100-year-old houses, the flagship property of the Shimaya Stays Collection, has been featured in Architecture Daily, Dwell and Lonely Planet Magazine UK (“100 incredible places to wake up in”, October 2019). With a capacity of up to 4 adults for longer stays, these machiya are located in the picturesque Higashiyama district, just minutes away from temples, gardens – and good coffee. Take the tour here.
